Welcome, Société française de vexillologie

Our latest sponsor is SFV, the Société française de vexillologie (French Society of Vexillology). SFV is a Paris-based non-profit founded in 1985 that publishes the quarterly Franciae Vexilla. It joined FIAV in 1991.

The society’s flag uses French colors and is formed of a white cross fimbriated by an alternatively red and blue border. These borders are separated from quarterly blue and red squares by a white border.

In addition to its website drapeaux-sfv.org, the society maintains a news blog and Facebook page. Find them on Instagram at @sfv_drapeaux and on Twitter at @DrapeauxSfv.

FIAV recognizes Vexiday

The Fédération internationale des associations vexillologiques (FIAV, the International Federation of Vexillological Associations) recognized 1 October as World Vexillology Day at its most recent meeting, the 27th International Congress of Vexillology (ICV) in London. We would like to thank the Flag Research Center for making this successful proposal to FIAV, giving this yearly event truly global recognition.

A new flag for Heraldica Slovenica

The Slovenian sponsors of World Vexillology Day, Heraldica Slovenica, have adopted a new flag for their organization (see above).

Indeed this flag is part of a family of symbols adopted by this FIAV member organization, according to the following infographic.

Portland Flag Association Show and Tell @ Salmon St Springs

At 2:00pm on Saturday, 1 October 2016 members of the Portland Flag Association will be holding a public show and tell at Salmon Street Springs at Waterfront Park in Portland, Oregon. Everyone is invited to bring a favorite flag to show, and to tell why they find it meaningful.

Salmon Street Springs is located in downtown Portland at the intersection of Naito Parkway and SW Salmon St.

HGZD at the National Congress of Croatian Historians

The Croatian Heraldic and Vexillological Assocation (Hrvatsko grboslovno i zastavoslovno društvo, HGZD) will be marking World Vexillology Day at the Fifth National Congress of Croatian Historians (Zadar, Croatia, 5 through 8 October). For details, contact Željko Heimer.

Welcome, Chesapeake Bay Flag Association

The Chesapeake Bay Flag Association (CBFA) is a group of flag enthusiasts from the Mid-Atlantic US States (Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia) and the District of Columbia. Founded in 1993 they have been a FIAV member since 1995. Visit their website at cbfa.vexillology.info. We are happy to have their support for Vexiday!

For 2016, three members of the group will be displaying flags from their collections:

Dale Grimes will have US World War II flags on display on the roadside near his home in Sparrows Point, MD.
Peter Ansoff will have a display on his flagpoles at his home in Annandale, VA.
Nick Artimovich will have a display of 14 historic American flags at the Department of Transportation offices in Washington, DC. To arrange a visit, please contact Nick at nicka21045@yahoo.com.

Georgian National Conference of Vexillology and Heraldry

The first Georgian National Conference of Vexillology and Heraldry will take place in Tblisi from 29 September to 1 October. Representatives from a number of Vexiday sponsors will be attending and are planning to commemorate Vexiday on the last day of the conference.

The conference agenda is also available (PDF). The conference is organized by the State Council of Heraldry at the Parliament of Georgia.

Welcome, Indian Vexillological Association

Welcome to our first Asian sponsor: the Indian Vexillological Association (IVA)! The Association was founded in 1995 and has been a FIAV member since 2007.

For 1 October 2016, IVA President Kambhampati Sanjeeva Rao will be exhibiting all countries’ national flags at his workplace in Nalgonda. Email sanjeevarao1963@yahoo.com for more information about the exhibit and the IVA.

Welcome, Polish Vexillological Society

The Polish Vexillological Society (Polskie Towarzystwo Weksylologiczne, PTW) was established in 1992 and has been a FIAV member since 1995. PTW’s website weksylologia.pl has a wealth of Polish-language content, including back issues of the society’s colorful newsletter, Flaga.
